The view at Domaine Heresztyn-Mazzini is positively breathtaking. "Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru 'Les Goulots' stands out as the winery's most exceptional plot, as it overlooks the village with breathtaking natural surroundings." - Florence Heresztyn
What you see is what you get! There's no better way to describe Florence and Simon's Burgundies. Their Gevrey reveals the same intense bouquet as its origins, while the Morey-St-Denis, with complex aromas of red and black berries, elegantly exudes the land it came from. Heresztyn-Mazzini wines are very distinctive, like nature's best in a bottle.
As someone who's naturally innovative, patient, and detail-oriented, Florence ensures that all work at the winery is slow and deliberate. From the vineyard to the cellar, every action is carefully thought through. She and Simon previously used organic farming and then gradually made the switch to biodynamic techniques. Before each harvest, the leaves and buds are removed from the vines to better control their yield. Bottling is scheduled according to the biodynamic calendar, a method that would surely please the Cistercian monks who once tended vineyards in Burgundy. The resulting wines are rare and exquisite. They're carefully crafted over time and age beautifully.
Florence's grandfather, Jan Heresztyn, founded the family's wine-growing estate. Having fled Poland in search of work during the Great Depression, he settled in Gevrey-Chambertin, a charming village in the Côte d'Or, and gradually acquired four hectares of vines, one plot at a time. Over the years, his sons Stanislas and Bernard expanded the modest operation now known as Domaine Heresztyn. This is where Stanislas's daughter, Florence, learned the trade. Today she is a member of Femmes et Vins de Bourgogne, an association of women wine growers in Burgundy, and is in charge of the Gevrey-Chambertin hail cannon.
Florence is the driving force that made this winery what it is today. Since she took the reins, Heresztyn-Mazzini wines have made impressive gains in character. We noticed the difference when dining in a restaurant in Beaune in 2012. The wine served to us was nothing like previous vintages. It was brimming with potential, winning over our hearts and palates.
"A 1985 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru 'Champonnets', out of a jeroboam, on our wedding day." - Florence Heresztyn
Known for its outstanding Burgundy reds, the Heresztyn-Mazzini winery was founded by Florence, a native of Burgundy, and Simon, from the Champagne region. After spending 10 years working on the Gevrey-Chambertin family vineyard, the pair wanted their own operation where they could showcase the potential of the local terroir.
