The Story Behind the Name Donnafugata
The name Donnafugata, literally “woman in flight,” recalls the story of Queen Maria Carolina, wife of Ferdinand IV of Bourbon, who fled Naples in the early 1800s upon Napoleon’s arrival, seeking refuge in the part of Sicily where the winery’s vineyards are now located. This historical event inspired the Donnafugata logo, depicting a woman with windblown hair, featured on every bottle.
A Philosophy of Excellence in Winemaking
Donnafugata pursues excellence in premium wine through meticulous attention to detail, whether in the vineyards, the wine cellars, or its commitment to the environment. The company believes that a great wine reflects the land from which it originates.
Terroir as the Core of Quality
The nature of the soil, sun exposure, altitude, climate, and the vines themselves are the key variables that allow Donnafugata to produce wines that faithfully express the unique character of each terroir.
