Maison Joseph Drouhin: Natural elegance from Burgundy

Founded in 1880 in Beaune, Maison Joseph Drouhin is one of Burgundy’s most esteemed wine houses, blending long‑standing family tradition with thoughtful innovation. For more than a century, it has been dedicated to expressing the subtlety and refinement of Burgundy’s most iconic terroirs.

A family history of excellence

The story begins with Joseph Drouhin, a young winemaker from the Chablis region who settled in Beaune to build his own wines. From 1918 onward, under his son Maurice’s leadership, the house evolved from a négociant to a full domaine, acquiring hallmark vineyards like the Clos des Mouches to craft wine rooted in place.

An extensive and diverse estate

Today, Maison Joseph Drouhin owns and farms nearly 100 hectares of vineyards throughout Burgundy: Chablis, Côte de Nuits, Côte de Beaune, Côte Chalonnaise and Mâconnais. Roughly two‑thirds of these sites are classified as Premier or Grand Cru, enabling the house to produce wines that faithfully reflect the region’s terroir diversity.

Philosophy and viticulture

Since the late 1980s, the estate has embraced environmentally mindful viticulture, managing its own vineyards according to organic and biodynamic principles to nurture soil health and allow natural terroir expression.

Style of the wines

The Drouhin style is defined by balance, finesse, harmony, and vintage expression. From prestigious whites such as Corton‑Charlemagne to powerful reds from Vosne‑Romanée, Gevrey‑Chambertin, or Clos de Vougeot, each wine demonstrates terroir integrity and elegant structure.

International presence

Maison Joseph Drouhin extends beyond Burgundy with Domaine Drouhin Oregon in the United States, where Pinot Noir and Chardonnay are crafted with the same exacting standards, bringing French winemaking tradition to a new terroir.

Wine tourism experiences

In Beaune, visitors can explore the “Oenothèque Joseph Drouhin,” featuring tastings, historic cellar tours, themed events, food & wine pairings, and vineyard walks, all designed to immerse guests in the house’s winemaking legacy.

Behind the wines

Today, the house is led by Joseph Drouhin’s great‑grandchildren, who carry forward the family’s tradition and commitment to quality across generations. Their devotion to terroir expression, thoughtful innovation, and legacy ensures each wine is memorable.
