Château Fontenil: Authentic Expression of Fronsac

Perched on the sun‑drenched slopes of Fronsac, overlooking the Isle valley and the town of Libourne, Château Fontenil is a family‑run wine estate that captures passion, expertise, and winemaking ambition. Part of the Rolland Collection, the estate is driven by internationally respected oenologists Michel and Dany Rolland, who chose to settle here and craft wines with the same meticulous approach they bring to clients around the world.

A Viticultural Heritage and Personal Adventure

After years of analysis and consulting for numerous estates, Michel and Dany Rolland established themselves in Fronsac in 1986, acquiring vineyards in Saillans they named Château Fontenil after one of the plots. Extensive renovations continued through 1999 to merge traditional vineyard practices with modern winemaking facilities, always with quality as the guiding principle.

A Distinguished Terroir

The estate’s nine hectares of vineyards sit on south‑facing clay‑limestone slopes typical of Fronsac. This exposure, combined with the region’s moderate climate, promotes optimal ripening of mostly Merlot — the main grape — along with Cabernet Sauvignon, producing wines with depth, aromatic intensity, and elegance.

From Vineyard to Cellar

At Château Fontenil, every stage from vineyard to cellar is designed to elevate the fruit. Vineyard work remains artisanal — pruning, soil cultivation, cover crops, hand harvesting and parcel‑by‑parcel sorting — while fermentation takes place in small wood and stainless steel vats, followed by 15–18 months of aging in French oak barrels, a portion of which is renewed annually.

Remarkable Wines

Château Fontenil wines are excellent ambassadors of the Fronsac appellation, combining richness, structure and finesse. The estate produces vintages that may be 100% Merlot or include a minor portion of Cabernet Sauvignon, all resulting from precise viticulture and thoughtful aging that delivers a satisfying depth and aging potential.

Experimental Projects and Special Cuvées

The estate has also pursued experimental ventures such as Le Défi de Fontenil, a “Vin de France” cuvée crafted from carefully tended old vines and matured in new oak. This wine was conceived to showcase the terroir’s potential under unique conditions.

Behind the Wines

Led by Michel and Dany Rolland, whose university training in oenology is matched by worldwide winemaking experience, Château Fontenil wines express both Bordeaux tradition and a modern sense of balance and elegance. Their personal commitment and respect for the land make each vintage a true reflection of the Fronsac terroir.
