Anchored in Sancerre for Over Five Centuries

Anchored in Sancerre for more than five centuries, Joseph Mellot is a prestigious family estate renowned for its exceptional wines from the Centre-Loire region. Founded by Pierre-Étienne Mellot and later guided by César Mellot, wine advisor to King Louis XIV, the estate embodies a unique balance between tradition and innovation.

Over 500 Years of History

The story of Joseph Mellot began in 1513 with Pierre-Étienne Mellot. It expanded significantly in 1698 when César Mellot became wine advisor to King Louis XIV. Generation after generation, the Mellot family has cultivated its heritage in Sancerre as both winemakers and restaurateurs.

In 1947, Edmond and Joseph Mellot opened a wine bar in Paris, further strengthening the family's presence in the wine world. Later, under the leadership of Alexandre Mellot, the estate expanded across all the appellations of the Centre-Loire region.

Broadening Horizons Led by Catherine Corbeau-Mellot

Since 2005, Catherine Corbeau-Mellot has passionately managed the entire Joseph Mellot estate. Today, the vineyard covers more than 100 hectares across all the appellations of the Centre-Loire region and also includes a wine trading activity.

With the support of her sons Armand and Adrien, Catherine continues the family heritage while modernizing practices and developing the estate’s influence internationally.

The company includes six independent estates:

  • Domaine Joseph Mellot: The family cradle, covering Sancerre, Menetou-Salon, Pouilly-Fumé, Pouilly-sur-Loire, Quincy, Reuilly, Coteaux du Giennois, and Châteaumeillant.
  • Domaine Jean-Michel Sorbe (acquired in 1999): Located in Quincy and Reuilly.
  • Domaine des Emois (since 2012): Based in Sancerre and certified organic since 2015.
  • Domaine des Mariniers: Located in Pouilly-Fumé and in organic conversion since 2020.
  • Domaine Pierre Duret and Domaine Geoffrenet Morval (since 2014): Located in the Châteaumeillant appellation.

Each year, around two million bottles are sold, nearly 80% of which are white wines, reflecting the richness and diversity of the Centre-Loire terroirs.

Craftsmanship in Every Bottle

The wines of Joseph Mellot reflect meticulous attention to detail. Harvesting is carried out plot by plot at optimal ripeness, and modern winemaking techniques are carefully applied.

The grapes are gently pressed to preserve their purity. In some appellations, cold maceration and aging on lees are used to enhance aromatic complexity, ensuring that each bottle faithfully expresses the distinctive style of Joseph Mellot wines.

Pioneers in Sustainable Development

Joseph Mellot is a pioneer in environmentally responsible viticulture. Since 2009, the estate has received numerous distinctions, including ISO 14001 certification and Haute Valeur Environnementale (HVE) certification for all its vineyards.

These certifications reflect a strong commitment to biodiversity, responsible water and fertilizer management, and sustainable viticultural practices.

The estate also practices integrated pest management, yield control, and landscape preservation. These initiatives have established Joseph Mellot as a leader in sustainable viticulture and a benchmark in the Centre-Loire region.

The Joseph Mellot estate is unique in vinifying wines from all appellations of the Centre-Loire region. Great care is taken to respect the typicity of each terroir through precise and meticulous vinification.
